Model Monkey Warren-McArthur 243B-AS1 Seat with Armored Plate and Headrest -- 1:24 Scale

vol_2_image

The scale modeling world has already entered a new era involving 3-D printed parts.  As the technology matures, so do the quality, range, and sophistication of 3-D detail parts that are available to scale modelers.  Model Monkey is an emerging manufacturer of a range of new and interesting detail parts.  We’re happy to bring you our inaugural review of Model Monkey products here with a look at their 1:24 scale Warren-McArthur seat for the P-51D Mustang.

The A-36, P-51A, P-51B, and P-51C Mustang were all outfitted with the Schick-Johnson S91-53074 seat.  Late P-51D-15NAs and all subsequent P-51D-20NA models were fitted with metal Schick-Johnson 95-100 seats.  In between these two seat styles was the all-metal Warren-McArthur 243B-AS1 seen in the P-51D-5NA and the P-51D-10NA, the early P-51D-15NA, and the P-51K Mustang.  Some early P-51s were later retrofitted with the Warren-McArthur.

This set provides a great-looking Warren-McArthur seat for 1:24 scale Mustangs.  You can varyingly use this set in the Airfix, Trumpeter, Bandai, Heller, and MPC kits, but each kit cockpit is a little different.  Use of this set might require a little different approach in modifying each kit cockpit to make sure the seat drops in just right.

The set consists of three 3-D printed parts.  Two things really stand out: first, being somewhat familiar with the process and effort involved in the 3-D design work, I would say that the underlying design work is outstanding: precise, clean, and accurate.  But of course, 3-D models on a computer must be translated into a part, and those parts sometimes are only as good as their printers which brings me to my second point: the printing here is virtually flawless.  3-D resin manufacturing processes “print” parts by building up very thin layers of plastic or resin atop a previous layer.  Here, the layering is extremely fine.  It’s still visible, but you have to squint to see the printed layers.  All you’ll need is a little bit of your favorite primer or some Mr. Surfacer applied before painting, and any texture should disappear.

Overall, Model Monkey’s 1:24 scale P-51D Warren-McArthur 243B-AS1 Seat with Armored Plate and Headrest gets two very enthusiastic thumbs up.  We extend our sincere thanks to Steve Larson at Model Monkey for the review sample.  You can visit them on the web, check out their other detail parts (including a number of others for the 1:24 scale P-51D!), and order their products directly at https://www.model-monkey.com
